At Ask for Jake, we understand the dynamic and multifaceted nature of emotions, especially in the context of suicide prevention. Our animated ’emotions’ speech bubble device represents this complexity, highlighting our commitment to creating a supportive environment. We recognise that emotions can be unpredictable and overwhelming, and our goal is to provide a space where these feelings can be expressed safely and constructively.

About Us

In 2019 the Braunton Devon community was shocked by the sudden Death of a young man Jake McPhail. Sadly, Jake took his own life. He was 18 years old.

In response, the Ask for Jake non-profit charity has been formed to provide a network of local businesses, coaches, community leaders and just general people where anyone can ‘Ask for Jake’ which will prompt immediate support on a personal and community-led basis.

This initiative is not solely about suicide but includes all challenges including self-harming, eating and behaviour issues, drug and alcohol dependency and any other issue which manifests in the first instance.

The basic aim is to be a much more accessible first point of contact for individuals who are struggling or for those concerned for others.

The first objective is to provide an unofficial network of support people and volunteers with basic training through peer groups, clubs and workplaces which is aimed at reaching and supporting anyone who is struggling and helping to avoid escalation of any mental health issue.

To do this we plan to introduce a community training program which is open to anyone in the community but will be controlled and managed by the Ask For Jake Committee.

Ask For Jake has since trained 87 people in safeTALK and 15 in ASIST and are currently seeking to fund those seeking an education and potentially a career in Counselling.

We fully recognise that these training and engagement opportunities will in themselves be a way to help and engage with people who need help and choose to help themselves by trying to help others and learning about the subject itself.

What We Do

We provide a safe and supportive environment where individuals can find support they need. Think of us as a reliable friend, a comfort blanket and a vessel to harness the emotional tide of negative thoughts. Our services include support groups and educational workshops designed to empower you with the tools needed to navigate your mental health journey.

Our support groups provide a platform for individuals to share their experiences and connect with others who understand their struggles. These sessions are facilitated by trained volunteers who ensure a safe and respectful environment. Additionally, our educational workshops cover a range of topics related to mental health, providing valuable insights and strategies for coping with stress, anxiety, and depression.

Ross McPhail speaks openly and honestly about the loss of his brother to suicide.

He recalls the months and weeks to the final days leading up to Jake’s death. Ross touches on what it means to grieve, to reach out and to help not just each other but ultimately your self.
